Environmental Biotechnology: Commercialisation Strategy and Market Validation

Challenge: An early-stage environmental biotechnology company had developed promising technology and established initial engagement with major industry partners, but needed to define the commercial opportunity around it. The key challenge was moving from technical potential and early trials towards a clear business model, beachhead market and evidence base for future investment and scale-up.

Approach: Provided commercialisation advisory support to help the team work backwards from its longer-term scale-up ambitions and define the first viable business around the technology. This included examining where the company should sit within the value chain, identifying potential buyers, beneficiaries and payers, exploring alternative commercial models, and assessing customer economics, procurement considerations and willingness to pay. Existing industry relationships and trial activity were used as evidence to refine the commercial strategy and identify the next questions requiring validation.

Outcomes

  • Clarified the key commercial questions that needed resolving alongside technical development

  • Explored alternative business models including service, equipment, licensing and circular-economy opportunities

  • Mapped potential buyers, beneficiaries and delivery partners across the industry value chain

  • Used existing industry trials and partner engagement to inform commercial hypotheses

  • Defined priority evidence needed around customer economics, procurement, willingness to pay and market entry

  • Connected near-term commercial validation with the company's longer-term scale-up and investment roadmap
